Boys at Risk IV

Boys Adrift

About the Conference

October 27th, 2022, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, Online Only

A growing proportion of American boys are now failing to fulfill their potential. The result is an increasing gender gap in achievement, with boys falling further and further behind their sisters. In this presentation, Dr. Leonard Sax explores a variety of factors that help explain why so many boys are now boys adrift – along with concrete recommendations for parents and professionals to help these children get back on track.

Leonard Sax

Boys at Risk IV - Dr. Leonard Saxe - Santa Fe Boys Educational FoundationOur Boys at Risk IV Conference features Leonard Sax, an internationally acclaimed author and lecturer. As a physician and a psychologist, Dr. Sax has visited and worked with more than 460 schools, universities, juvenile justice facilities, communities of faith, corporations, pre-Ks and nursery schools, community groups, and parent groups. He will share what he has learned from these visits and from his 30+ years as both a medical doctor and as a Ph.D. psychologist.

Dr. Sax has authored several best-selling books. He will weave themes from the following titles together in 6 hours of presentations focusing on 3 specific areas:

  • Why Gender Matters — the emerging science of sex differences
  • Boys Adrift — the growing epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men
  • The Collapse of Parenting — how we hurt our kids when we treat them like grown-ups and how this has fed the medicalization of misbehavior

Consider that boys

  • are 4 times as likely to be “disenrolled” from preschool
  • are twice as likely to be diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
  • 4 times more likely to be diagnosed on the autism spectrum
  • receive most of the disciplinary measures in our schools
  • are 5 times more likely to spend time in juvenile detention
  • lag far behind in basic reading skills, while girls score equally on math

And men

  • constitute only 40% of college graduates
  • make up 90% of federal and state prisoners
  • represent most of the deaths of despair from suicide, drug overdose, and alcoholism
